Why Uthuwankanda is important?

  Uthuwankanda is a well known city in Sri Lanka. It holds its popularity because of a well known thief named Saradiel. Even though he was a thief, he was a hero among the people in Sri Lanka. Even after a century his spirit still remains, people used call him the Robin Hood of Sri Lanka. Saradiel used to steal from rich ones, but never harmed innocents. That is why Saradiel became a hero.
    The Uthuwankanda rock is also called Saradiel rock. It is believed that Saradiel used to escape and hide in Uthuwankanda after every encounter with British police. However he was captured by the British police, after many successful escape attempts.

It will take about an hour to get on the top of the rock. On the top of the rock there is a glorious view of the Sabaragamuwa  mountains. There is a cave underneath the rock Which Saradiel used as his hide. In side this cave, there is a tunnel. Which is believed that Saradiel used to escape to Bo-Ella (a waterfall near Uthuwankanda). The tunnel is still there and remains dark.

The Saradiel's Village

  Not so long ago, Dr. Ariyasena U. Gamage start a project of remaking the Saradiel's village in this area. Today, its a popular attraction of the whole country.  You can enjoy the hike to Saradiel rock, after watching the village. This village really has the overlook of a late1800s countryside Sri Lankan  village. There are plenty of statues representing the characters used o live with Saradiel. The artworks are remarkable. The village will supply a guide dressed like a villager who will guide you to live a few moments in rural Sri Lanka.

Directions

  Uthuwankanda is a very small town located (1km away from Ishan Hotel) in Mawanella, Sri Lanka. In the center of this small town you'll find the clock tower. Near the clock tower there is a road lead you to Uthuwana village. Uthuwana is a peaceful place which is surrounded by paddy fields. after a 30 minutes walk, you'll find the entrance to the "Saradiel Village". There are trails to Saradiel rock on opposite side of the village. It is possible to climb to the top of this rock. The cliffs on the way will make your hike an adventure.

Uthuwankanda : Also known as Saradiel Rock. A popular hike destination among the locals. Can be reached after a 45 minutes walk from the hotel. On the top of this rock, there is an amazing 360 degree view of the whole area. Many local travelers hike to this rock after visiting the Saradiels village. It may take few hours to complete the hike.

Bo-Ella : A natural waterfall which can be reached after a one hour walk or a few minutes ride from the hotel.

The ancient bricks bridge : One of the oldest bricks bridges in Sri Lanka, which is build in early 1800s. This bridge is very special because the whole bridge is made of only bricks and a special paste. The constructors hadn't use  cement, concrete or steel. And the bridge is still in use for traffic.

Pinnawala Elephant orphanage : A popular tourist attraction located few kilometers away from the hotel. Which is an orphanage and breeding ground for wild elephants.

The Bible rock : This 2780 feet high rock has 7 acres plane on its top where helicopters can be landed. Gives an amazing view of the Sabaragamuwa mountains.


Herbal and spice gardens : Ma-Oya (Ma-river) region has the best series of spice gardens inside the province. Most Two of them are not more than 1 km away from Ishan Hotel
